Big A little a - Kelly Herold's blog dedicated to all the kid-lit news that's fit to blog. Chock full of great reviews and links to other sites and resources.

Jen Robinson's Book Page - Jen's become a force in the book blogging world. Lots of information and reviews here, as well as thoughtful comments on literature and children's books in general.

Scholar's Blog - Book reviews from "across the puddle." Michele Fry's specialty is fantasy, so if you want to know what's cookin' in Middle Earth (or any other fantasy land), click on over to her blog.


Magazines & Journals

Ranger Rick - My favorite and, more importantly, my kids' favorite. Lots of great photos of animals, games, stories, cartoons and letters from readers. A must-have at some point in your child's development.

The Horn Book Magazine - Bible of the children's publishing industry since 1924. Full of reviews of new and upcoming books, as well as articles and editorials.

Kirkus Reviews - One of the oldest and most dependable book review organizations in the country. Posts capsule reviews of dozens of books every week. So if you're constantly looking for something new to read, bookmark this site.


Web Sites

Book Sense - Organization for independent bookstores. Has a "Store Locator" to find an independent bookstore near you. Also lists independent bookstore bestsellers, and offers gifts cards valid at most Book Sense stores.

Jan Brett - "3,569 pages of free activities, coloring pages, and projects." That's how Jan Brett describes her site, and it's all true. You'll not only find dozens of on-line activities, there's also a huge list of things you can do at home or in class. And make sure you watch her videos on how to draw everything from a hedgehog to a toucan. A fascinating site for adults and kids alike.

Children's Book Reviews - A unique book review site: all of their reviews are written by kids! A great place to go if you want to know what real children and real young adults thought about those books you keep seeing on the stores' display tables.

Earth 911 - Comprehensive information on environmental issues, pollution, and recycling. Games and activities area for kids as well as resources for parents and teachers.

KidsBookshelf - Christina Lewis' site dedicated to children's books. Has lots of reviews, links, and resources for parents, teachers and kids.

National Geographic Kids - Big assortment of games, pictures, cartoons, and activities. Check out the "Creature Features" section for great photos and facts about animals.

School Library Journal - Web site for one of the most respected and widely read library journals. Go here for authoritative reviews and articles about children's books.

VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) - Web site for magazine dedicated to books and issues related to young adult readers.


Writing Resources

Children's Book Council - The nonprofit trade association of publishers and packagers of trade books and related materials for children and young adults. Lists thousands of new and existing books, as well as awards and prizes, reading lists, and information on how to get your book published.

Poets & Writers - Get the skinny on contests, awards, conferences, retreats, and who's who. A goldmine for would-be writers.

SCBWI (The Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) - Great resource for anyone in the business. In fact, this is where yours truly found his editor. (My wife had to surf the entire Web to find this site. But you can just click on the link and you're there.)
